ROUND KAILASH 32
days (CAMPING TOUR)
Mt. Kailash, 6,740
m (22,112ft) is situated to the north of the Himalayan
barrier. It is the perfect mountain with awesome beauty
with 4 great faces. It is the spiritual centre for
four great religions: Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism,
the Jain religion and the pre-Buddhist animistic religion
- Bon-Po. For Tibetans; it is known as Khang Rimpoche
(Precious Jewel of Snow) and they see it as the navel
of the world. It is said that a stream from the mountain
pours into a nearby lake and from here rivers flow
in the four cardinal directions. The River of the
Lion Mouth to the North, the River of the Horse Mouth
to the east, the River of the Peacock Mouth to the
south and the River of the Elephant Mouth to the West.
Strangely four major rivers are indeed originated
near Kailash, the Indus, the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra),
the Karnali and the Sutlej. Tibetans believe that
it is the residence of Demchog, a fierce looking tantric
deity who lives there with his consort, Dorje Phagmo.
For the Tibetans also, it is a particularly special
place in that their poet saint Milerappa, spent several
years here meditating in a cave.
For the Hindus Mount Kailash is the earthly manifestation
of Mt. Meru, their spiritual centre of the universe.
On the top, their most revered God, Shiva and his
consort Parvati.
For the Jains, an Indian religious group, Kailash
is the site where their first prophet achieved enlightenment.
For the older, more ancient religion of Bon, it is
the site where its founder Shanrab is said to have
descended from heaven. It was formerly the spiritual
centre of Zhang Zung, the ancient Bon Empire that
once included all of western Tibet. Bon people walk
around the mountain in a counter clockwise manner,
unlike the other religions.
Over the centuries
pilgrims have constantly journeyed immense distances
to achieve enlightenment or cleanse themselves of
sin, braving enormous distances, particularly harsh
weather.
In fact, the entire region of Mt. Kailash is of important
religious significance and includes the two turquoise-blue,
pristine high-altitude lakes of Mansarovar and Rakshesa.
Nature lovers can encounter numerous unusual species
of birds, wildlife, and flora here. This holy region
is known as center of the universe, attracting scholars
and researchers from all over.
CONDITIONS
& BIKING PROFILE:
This is undoubtedly the most challenging
tour that we are running. In terms of the average
altitude, and the length of the trip, the Lhasa to
Kathmandu ride can fairly claim to be the highest
mountain biking in the world. The importance of two
days, spent gently sightseeing around Lhasa, cannot
be over emphasized, as proper acclimatization is vital
to anyone hoping to complete this route. We start
from the Tibetan capital -Lhasa, and cross many Passes,
before eventually descending from the Tibetan Plateau
into Nepal. 50% of our time though, is spent on the
Tibetan Plateau at heights above 4000 metres. The
main road has been well built by the Chinese, with
approximately one third of it metalled. The rest is
on well-worn dust tracks. As with our other bike trips,
there will be a chance to get off road, using the
small herders' paths, which dissect many of the switchback
descents and climbs.
This is our most demanding
cycling trip, for which you will need to be reasonably
fit and put in some training. Throughout the route,
we will have the support of a back-up vehicle, and
anyone who is not feeling up to cycling a particular
stage has the option to get on the bus. On the main
route the cycling is simple with no technical difficulties,
but for those of you who want more of a thrill off
the road, the footpaths, which dissect the hundreds
of switchbacks, offer as much of a challenge as you
could want.
This expedition allows
time for exploring many of Tibet's most fascinating
cities and monasteries and gives the rider the opportunity
to ride the best and most scenic portions of the friendship
highway that links these two ancient Himalayan Kingdoms.
Support vehicles carry all equipment (and riders who
may need a rest on the climbs!) giving us the freedom
to accommodate participants of many different levels
of riding skills.
An experienced Nepali
mountain bike guide, fluent in English and Tibetan,
will ride with you, look after you and your equipment,
help you with all-important altitude, acclimatisation
and other health matters, and deal with Chinese officials
and support crew. Your trip starts and finishes in
Kathmandu, where the guide will take care of all your
last-minute needs, endorse your Chinese visa, and
ensure that this fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime experience
will be trouble -free
